Students' Goals Project Introduction

Student Goals - Success

Goals are important.
Our project will present a solution to help students meet their goals.
Workday, Inc wants to help college students to plan ahead to achieve success as well as to discover the helpfulness of the Student Goals product.

Students' Goals Project - Key Findings

We found that on the path to achieve success, students have goal variations; therefore, their successes are individualized.
Often times, they change their goals from time to time.
Finally, they face some challenges or experience a lot of obstacles along the way to achieve success

Students' Goals Project - Key Challenges

To gain insights from a large scope: students, admins, and advisors are one of the challenges we face. Furthermore, coming up with one solution that students find helpful and are willing to keep using can be hard. Moreover, we get out of our comfort zone to test demographics not limited to Cornell students to keep the data as complete as possible.

Four Major Phases

Research Phase

We interviewed 20 students, 7 advisors, and 7 administrators. We also received 26 online surveys. Moreover, we analyzed more than 150+ affinity diagrams for this project.

I was in charge of interviewing 14 administrators and advisors.

Ideation Phase

Due to the time constrain, we only focused on how students interact with the app.

We created a journey map and user flow during this phase.

I sketched multiple solutions; for students with no goals or some goals, they would need personality tests and professional tests to determine what fields or industries they might be interested in.

User Flow

We further explore students’ pain points and brainstorm opportunities through mapping out students’ journey to success including three stages: from the left to right: student having no goals, students who sort of have a vague goal, and students having a clear goal.

Paper Prototype + Usability Testing Phase

We conducted 6 usability testings in total at Cornell University and Ithaca College. The picture shows that we use paper to test the first round of paper prototypes.

In the second usability testing, we had a more advanced high-fidelity prototype on the laptop.

I participated in the first round of usability testing on paper prototypes.

Mid-Fidelity + High-Fidelity Prototype Phase

I was responsible for the Message function. With the easy access to Alumni who shared the same background with the student, I thought it might be a good idea to connect them. Moreover, being able to instantly chat with their advisors, it would reduce at least 2 weeks of waiting time to make an appointment with the advisor.
During usability testing, we found out that students appreciated this function because they imagine the ability to talk to their advisor in real-time.

Students' Goals Project Solutions Summary

Students with No Goals

We will be providing interest selection and possible career/major path generation along with personality and professional tests.
These test results will provide a possible career/major path for students. In addition, we will be sharing alumni stories for students to get a general idea of what other students have experienced.

Students With Some Ideas/Goals

We think that by providing Direct Messaging to admins and advisors could help students solve their questions in a timely manner. Also, generate recommendations for the students that are tailored by their interests.

Students' Goals Project Introduction

In this app, we will set a reminder to update and reflect on their goals. We will provide a platform for students to reflect and create day-to-day actions.
A feature that they can invite friends to complete goals together in order to reinforce them with social encouragement is also helpful.
We might as well build a reward system to encourage those who complete the goals. Reinforce goal completion by surprise rewards.
